I think my son (5 year old) is getting better at answering open-ended questions as I’m trying to be intentional about this. On Sunday when I asked him to share what he learned from DT, he told me very concrete examples and he went on to tell me about his Acts2Kids service message about building house on the solid rock of Jesus. Furthermore, I also got to ask open-ended questions to my IH kids and found out that his ‘high’ of the week was his mom coming back from the hospital with his baby sister!
My approach to parenting was defaulting on being corrective (focusing on the negatives), but now I'm trying to actively look for ways to pointing out the positives with descriptive praise, a tool I’ve learned in Convo with Kids. My son (age 5) responds with goofy smiles, hugs, and sometimes even surprises me by running over and saying, "I love you." It has changed our relational dynamic to be a lot warmer, and I'm so thankful for all the tools we have learned!
I just used couple of open ended questions I’ve learned in Convo with Kids with my husband on how his c101 group went, and it was a really nice conversation! Instead of asking the usual, ‘How did it go,” I asked from the list of open ended questions that I had received from the handout: What happened that was unexpected? What new thing did you learn about the students?
